    Dear Mr. Ariail,

This is not necessarily in reference to the cartoon above. I have no idea who Cotton Owens was. My reason for writing is that our local paper, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, carries your cartoons, and they are always fun and incisive. Your animals are particularly good. I just wanted you to know that. One other thing: I need to know the proper way to pronounce your last name. Phonetically if you have access to the IPA, or by rhyme. Whatever works for you.

    All the best,

    Lane Goodall

Folks, this is a local cartoon for the Spartanburg Herald-Journal. Everette “Cotton” Owens died this past week at 88. He was just inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. He was a true legend in NASCAR racing and innovation and he was a life-long resident of Spartanburg.
