I’m proud to announce I won the 2010 SCPA award for cartooning yesterday at the annual awards banquet in Columbia. This is one of the 3 cartoons entered in the competition.

This is my second award for cartoons in 2010. The other was a citation for excellence in the international Ranan Lurie United Nations Editorial Cartooning Awards.

How many cartoonists are there in SC?

  7. Robert Ariail on March 8th, 2011 6:28 pm

Rich, that’s a good question. The award is given to cartoons and humorous illustrations( apples and oranges in my book) because even a few years ago there were only 3 full time cartoonists working in SC- I guess with so few, they couldn’t just have an editorial cartoonist category.
To my knowledge, I’m the last full time editorial cartoonist working in SC. They gave a third place to Roger Harvell from the Greenville News in this year’s award( there was no second place ) even though Roger was unceremoniously fired in 2008 -a year before me. He still does local and SC cartoons for them. No way would I do that for The State- I won’t even let them buy my cartoons through syndication.

WOW. I guess unless you are a full-time ‘working cartoonist’, you don’t even show up on your radar, huh Mr. A? I am not a ‘full-time working cartoonist’….but I was the one who won 2nd place this year in the SC Press Association. I actually work a fulltime (40+ hours per week job, teach classes 4 nights a week at my alma mater Piedmot Technical College and draw my toons mostly on the weekends…when I don’t have family stuff planned with my wife and kids). There’s also another very good inkslinger in Charleston named Steve Stegelin. He is only a lowly ‘part-time stringer’ like me. I am the one who has won 1st place in the SC Press Association 4 out of the last 6 years. I came in 2nd to you twice. You are officially ‘put on notice’……both Mr. Stegelin and I are BOTH gunning for you….don’t get too comfy!
