    I Love your work sir. I too was once fired from a newspaper—through no fault of my own. I am over it now!

    Robert this cartoon is offensive to Catholics. The issue is so much more complicated than you can capture in this art form. All Catholics suffer when you make this kind of attack.

    Leslie, this is not an attack, but a well informed opinion. The news is pretty specific that the Pope(then Cardinal Ratzinger) had some knowledge of a pedophile under his jurisdiction in Germany and only after much complaint moved him to get therapy. The pedophile then returned to preying on children. Ratzinger’s deputy says that was his fault, but I think he’s taking one for the Pope. All catholics suffer from these heinous crimes committed by members of their church far more than my bringing light to the subject.

    your work reopens those wounds. I don’t know the specifics of the Ratzinger case but I know that years ago the prevailing “wisdom” was that these people could be treated. There was also a lot of confusion, and the bishops were relying on the advice of their attorneys in many cases. All of them as I understand it, see now their errors and have moved to take better care of these problems, help the victims and institute programs to help avoid new problems. To do cartoons of this nature reopens all those wounds and gives fuel to the fire from many people in this state who think Catholics are of the devil, not their Christian brothers and sisters. Those people, and there are a lot of them, really are out there.

    Leslie, I’m sorry that this cartoon is so offensive to you- that’s not my goal. I’m sure you’re right that there are a lot of non-Catholics that will use this to validate their hatred of Catholicism, but so can any critical cartoon on a number of volatile issues.
